About me, as a therapist

Hi! I'm Kate Mageau! Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a cis-gender woman, of Chilean and European settler descent, living on Duwamish land. I am pansexual, neurodivergent with ADHD, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. Empowering Therapy is my private practice for therapy, ADHD and Autism Assessments, Gender-Affirming Letters, and training for other therapists.

 

I am also a domestic violence and intimate partner violence survivor. After I experienced abuse, I attended a support group at a domestic violence advocacy agency and learned about the cycle of abuse. I also saw a mental health counselor who taught me more about abuse and how to heal from it. Five years later, I returned to the same agency and volunteered my time to co-facilitate the same support group, where I continued to learn even more about domestic violence.

Domestic Violence education

I learned further more about abuse and domestic violence in graduate school in Miami, Florida, and then working at an agency and running that specializes in helping domestic violence survivors heal from abuse, where I led more domestic violence counseling groups. Today, I continue helping domestic violence and intimate partner violence survivors through individual therapy, Warning Signs books, my Healing from Toxic Relationships course, community presentations, and podcast interviews.

Youth experience

Before I became a therapist, I worked with youth through Breakthrough Collaborative and the YMCA. At Breakthrough, I taught a course on writing college essays, and sourced internships and scholarships for high schoolers. In YMCA middle school programs, I taught a socio-emotional class and a career counseling class, assisted in the Language Arts class, took youth on field trips, and helped the youth produce a short movie about bullying. When I left my job at the YMCA, for financial reasons, it was really hard to say goodbye. A month or so later, I went back to YMCA and volunteered in their after school programs - I stayed another year until all my youth participants went on to high school. It gives me great joy to be working with youth again, now as a therapist.

Fun parts of life!

I also enjoy my life and spend time not thinking about abuse! I enjoy reading, writing, crochet, traveling, yoga, going to art walks, and spending time with those I love – my family, my friends, my wonderful and supportive boyfriend who is nothing like my ex, and my cat, Penelope.
